In Eugene Jarecki’s new film The King, the Stax Music Academy is featured in a scene in which they pile into Elvis Presley’s 1963 Rolls Royce and sing Aretha Franklin’s “Chain of Fools” in front of the house in which she was born in Memphis. TIME magazine called the students “royalty.” The film, which debuted as Promised Land at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017 and as The King at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018, premiered in Memphis Friday, July 13. During a Q&A with Jarecki, he explained how he negotiated the sale of the Rolls after the filming to ensure that the Stax Music Academy received a $25,00o donation.
