Summer Music Experience may culminate in an unforgettable performance, but the weeks leading up to the Finale Showcase are where the real story unfolds.

This summer, Stax Music Academy welcomed 118 students – the largest SME class in program history. More than 50 campers were new to the Academy, joining returning students and alumni mentors for four weeks of music, collaboration, creativity, and personal growth.

From learning the history of Stax Records to writing original songs, collaborating in the recording studio, meeting professional artists, and building confidence, students experienced far more than a traditional summer music camp.

Students kicked off camp with a tour of the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, learning how Stax Records helped shape the sound of Soul music and introduced legendary artists whose influence continues today. Before learning choreography or rehearsing the 27-song finale set list, campers gained an understanding of the history and legacy that make Stax Music Academy unlike any other music program.

While rehearsals were a major part of each day, SME is designed to expose students to every side of the music industry. Throughout the program, campers rotated through classes in music business, marketing, songwriting, production, and performance before joining instrument groups, vocal rehearsals, and full ensemble practices each afternoon. They learned how songs are written, recorded, promoted, and performed while developing the skills needed to succeed both on and off the stage.

SME extends beyond the classroom through opportunities students won’t find anywhere else. Throughout the month, campers learned directly from professional musicians, producers, and artists who shared both their expertise and personal experiences in the music industry.

Former member of The Bar-Kays, Larry Dodson, visited with students, offering reflections on his career and encouraging them to pursue excellence in both music and life. Memphis vocalist and producer Dot.Moore led a vocal clinic, giving singers valuable coaching on technique, performance, and stage presence. GRAMMY-nominated, multi-platinum producer Carlos “Six July” Broady, along with UnitedMasters artist Tre’V, introduced students to music production through sampling.

Students also had the opportunity to star alongside Memphis native and GRAMMY-nominated children’s artist Snooknuk in the official music video for her single, “Do Re Mi.” Earlier this year, members of the Stax Music Academy choir recorded vocals for the song, and during camp, students helped bring the project to life by participating in the music video shoot. Students worked in teams inspired by legendary record labels—Stax, Motown, and Atlantic—writing original songs, rehearsing together, and recording music in the studio. Their work culminated in Be the Band Day, where each group performed, competed in songwriting challenges and a Beat Battle, and took part in the always-popular Red Carpet experience.

One of the most meaningful aspects of SME is seeing students return year after year as mentors. This summer, several SMA alumni served as program interns, helping to guide younger students while continuing to grow as artists and leaders themselves. Their presence served as a reminder that the Academy’s impact extends well beyond a single summer.

For many students, the biggest lessons extended beyond music, they were about confidence, perseverance, and community.

By the time students took the Overton Park Shell stage for the finale concert, they had accomplished so much. Along with writing and and recording original music, they developed new creative skills, gained a deeper understanding of the many opportunities in the music industry. Most importantly, they discovered what can happen with hard work, mentorship, and community.
