What Does Soul Mean to You?
Stax Music Academy invites artists, songwriters, and producers from the Memphis area to participate in an exciting songwriting competition celebrating the heart, history, and spirit of Soul music.

Participants are challenged to write and produce an original song, 3 minutes and 30 seconds or less, that captures and communicates what “soul” means to you. This is more than a songwriting competition – it’s an opportunity to share your unique voice, perspective, and creativity while honoring the musical legacy that makes Memphis a cornerstone of Soul music.

Your submission will have the opportunity to be heard by three accomplished songwriters with chart-topping and Diamond-certified credits, making this a chance to showcase your artistry and connect your music to a tradition that continues to inspire generations.

Submission Criteria
Submissions will be considered based on the following:

  • Originality — The song must be an original composition created by the participating artist, songwriter, and/or producer.
  • Theme & Concept — The song should clearly communicate the participant’s personal interpretation of what soul means.
  • Songwriting — Strong lyrics, storytelling, creativity, memorable melodies, and meaningful expression.
  • Musicianship & Production — Quality of melody, arrangement, instrumentation, performance, vocal delivery, and overall production.
  • Authenticity — The submission should reflect the artist’s genuine voice, perspective, and creative identity.
  • Emotional Impact — The song should connect with the listener and create a lasting emotional impression.
  • Memphis & Soul Connection — Participants are encouraged to draw inspiration from Memphis’ rich musical history, culture, and enduring influence on Soul music.
  • Time Limit — The completed song must be 3 minutes and 30 seconds or less.

Submission Deadline: Sept. 24 at 11:59 PM

What We’re Looking For

Whether your inspiration comes from your life experiences, your community, your musical influences, or the legacy of Memphis, this is your opportunity to turn your perspective into music.

Bring your creativity. Bring your story. Bring your voice.?What is soul? Let your song answer.
