Memphis, TN – August 12, 2024 – Stax Music Academy (SMA) is proud to announce the launch of Music Employs, an innovative arts and entertainment production program designed to equip young people with the skills and opportunities needed for success in the dynamic world of music and entertainment. Formerly known as Music Works, this program has been a pivotal part of the academy’s mission since its inception in the fall of 2022.
Music Employs builds on the success of its predecessor, Music Works, which secured 196 gig-based job placements for students and alumni last year. The program serves youth from 5th grade through age 25, providing comprehensive support in preparing for, procuring, and sustaining gigs, internships, and long-term employment in the arts and entertainment sectors.
SMA began with a focus on nurturing musically talented students. Recognizing the diverse needs of its students, SMA launched the Music Works program to develop not only musical talent but also the social, emotional, and life skills essential for thriving in the industry.
Today, SMA is proud to report that every graduate finds their path, whether in higher education or the vibrant world of arts and entertainment. Throughout its 24-year history, SMA students have collaborated with faith-based organizations, production companies, music venues, and community theater groups, assuming roles as lead sound and production staff, music directors, videographers, and more. The academy’s workshops and master classes, led by industry professionals such as lawyers, accountants, and music executives, teach the varied skills required in the arts and entertainment sector.
In its second year, Music Employs has already achieved remarkable success, with 116 gig-based job placements in the first quarter of FY24 alone. The program has garnered attention from peer organizations seeking to hire SMA students and alumni for production-related roles. As the program continues to expand, it will provide workers for positions across all aspects of the production sector.
In August 2024, Music Works will officially transition to Music Employs, reflecting the program’s evolving focus on youth development and workforce readiness—a vital hallmark of Stax Music Academy. The curriculum will prepare students to enter the workforce or further their education through college or specialized training programs, such as the entertainment trade school program at 1500 Academy.
